Synopsis

DESCRIPTION: A heated debate over the nature of morality leads to an unusual wager between the chivalrous Lord Gregory and his cynical friend Alastair Blake. Reluctantly crossing the shadowy threshold of Victorian Londons underworld, Arthur Gregory finds his steadfast beliefs about virtue and vice upended by a beautiful, uncanny woman who seeks to challenge and fulfill his deepest desires. EXCERPT: Were he a less rational man, Lord Gregory would have thought that his beloved wife had somehow been returned to him – and in the shadows of this strange and silent bedchamber, he couldn’t bring himself to entirely rule it out. The shape of her body, her long flowing hair, the tightness of her nipples as they swelled to fill their pink circles all stirred intimate memories of a blissful and all-too-brief marriage, a tragic love that he’d vowed would never be diminished by the pursuit of another. Was this, then, his reward for staying true to her memory? He remembered himself only as she reached for his face with her right hand, as she caressed his flushed cheek and traced the hard line of his jaw. “A sanctity,” he mumbled, “that is involatile… inviolable…” The corners of her mouth curled into a smile so bright that he could almost hear her laughter, and she shook her heard as she placed a finger over his lips to cut short his protest. And then she lifted onto her toes to kiss him. Never in his life had he been kissed the way that this beautiful stranger kissed him. No hesitation or modest brush of his lips, no shy glances down between their feet: she threw her arms around his shoulders and kissed him with a frenzy of passion that left him staggering backward and wrapping his arms around her waist simply to keep their balance. The woman tasted his lips and explored his mouth; she wound her tongue along the length of his tongue and drew him deeper between her lips, into a more intimate kiss than hed ever dared to imagine. “I’m not,” Arthur weakly murmured, “I’m not here to buy you.” She gave no answer, but simply took the noblemans right hand in both of hers and slipped her fingers between his to squeeze his palm. Then she dropped her left hand between them and led him with the other toward the bed.
